SIGNIFICANT DEFICIENCY

Upon receipt of the trial balance, the beginning net asset balance did not agree with the ending net asset balance per the September 30, 2020 audited combined financial statements. Context: The Organizations deviated from their standard year-end closing policies and procedures. Cause: The Organization?s methodology for determining the year-end closing entries for the year ended September 30, 2021 for Friends of Vista Hill Foundation was not consistent with the methodology used in the prior year and certain transactions were erroneously posted directly to the net asset accounts instead of to revenue and expense accounts. Effect: The result was a material adjustment to correct investment return and the net asset balance. Recommendation: We recommend reviewing and revising, if necessary, the month and year-end closing policies and procedures to ensure all activity is correctly recorded across all cost centers. Questioned Costs: None Views of Responsible Officials: Management agrees with the audit finding and a response is included in the corrective action plan.
