The Coalition currently does not have the relevant qualifications and/or training in not-for-profit accounting to prepare financial statements, including note disclosures, in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). Criteria: Financial statements, including note disclosures, should be reported in accordance with GAAP. Cause: The Coalition is a board-run organization with no employees. Those charged with governance do not have the relevant qualifications and/or training in not-for-profit accounting to prepare financial statements, including note disclosures, in accordance with GAAP. Effect: The Coalition relies on the external accounting firm to ensure the financial statements are in accordance with GAAP. Recommendation: Those charged with governance of the Coalition should either obtain the relevant experience and qualifications to prepare financial statements in accordance with GAAP, or alternatively, will continue to receive this finding. Views of Responsible Officials and Planned Corrective Actions: We as management, have discussed this finding with our auditor and have come to understand that this finding is very common for organizations our size. It is our opinion that the benefits obtained by the Coalition in employing someone with the experience necessary to produce GAAP-based financial statements, including note disclosures, would be outweighed by the costs. We are comfortable relying on our external auditor to provide this expertise.
